Philip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld

Someone mentioned to me that Philip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld series has a Sufi character. Hence I looked around and asked a few people if they had more information and although I did not find out about the character but instead I found something more interesting – The main character of the novels is actually Sir Richard Francis Burton who is a real person and is famous for his book chronicling his visit to Mecca and Medina disguised as a Hajji (A Muslim Pilgrim).

  1. The Sufi character in the Riverworld series is named Nur ed Din. I believe he was introduced in book 3, The Dark Design. He is a major secondary character in book 4, The Magic Labyrinth, and in book 5, Gods of Riverworld.

  2. Thanks for the info Ross. I have not read the book so I was curious to know about this info. Thanks!

  3. You’re right ross, the character is called nur ed din (el musafir) but he’s introduced in the first book in which he’s a friend of richard burton. He talks with him about islam, and they sail the river in the … Hajj 😉 those characters don’t appear in 2nd book, which introduced mark twain, john lackland or cyrano de bergerac, burton and nur come back in 3, 4 and 5st book. Maybe the author want to say we need a mystic initiation to know the meaning of (river)world..
